We Water Warriors get excited about a lot of things…
laughter, racing, wine, dancing, beer, friendship, ice cream, and PADDLING… to name a few. We are an all-women’s recreational team that practices twice a week at Cultus Lake. Our team is a member of the larger paddling club, Sudden Impact.
Our motto is ‘Women Empowering Women’. We lift each other up with encouragement to be our best when we are paddling, and we work on our fundamental techniques when the season starts – which is a good reminder for even those who have been paddling for awhile. We welcome new comers! You don’t need any paddling experience to come try us out. Once you come try a practice, you’ll be hooked – part of it will be the paddling, and part of it will be our fun-loving spirit! We have many opportunities for social events during the entire year, even the off-season, and there is always a new activity to try with a team mate. We get together for anything from hiking and paddle boarding, to seeing a concert or a play, or just grabbing a drink.
We practice twice per week (Monday and Thursday) and encourage you to commit to as many practices as you can attend. The season goes from mid-March (just after daylight savings) to the first week of September. Our practices are usually 1.5 hours long (no, we don’t paddle the whole time). At first, we paddle for a couple of minutes at a time and then take a break. By the end of the season, we will have the fitness level to paddle around the perimeter of Cultus Lake. It’s awesome!
We practice with a dragon boat coach. She provides coaching for the team as well as individual feedback. There are usually quite a few new members of the team and she takes the time to show you how to paddle with good technique. This sport doesn’t just use arm strength. It’s a full body workout – you’ll be surprised at how much you will use your abs and legs.
We are classified as a recreational team, but we are competitive when it counts. We have the drive to push ourselves individually during practices, so we can come together and compete when we are racing! We typically participate in 5-6 regattas per season. In 2020, we have 4 one-day regattas that are within driving distance of Chilliwack (in Port Moody, Vancouver, Harrison, and Kamloops). We have 2 out of town regattas (Nanaimo and Penticton) that will include hotel and travel costs. We do our best to keep costs down by carpooling and sharing hotel rooms. We frequently come out of these regattas wearing medals for our efforts!
Our membership fees include all equipment! We provide the PFD and paddle for you at practice and regattas if you do not have your own. We wear black bottoms and a team shirt (provided or available for purchase) when we compete.
We look forward to meeting you and having you come and try with us! All ages and fitness levels of women welcome!
